What Items Does Goodwill NOT Accept? Things Goodwill Won't Take

Published on December 13, 2022

Goodwill accepts almost anything, but there are certain items that Goodwill will not accept. If you're wondering what to do with your 'non-keep' pile, knowing what Goodwill doesn't take can help you decide what your next steps will be.

These policies are going to apply to most Goodwill thrift stores. But you should always call ahead to your local Goodwill to confirm prior to your visit. As a reminder, all Goodwill thrift stores and donation centers are independently operated by their local community.

Large Appliances

Items like washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, stoves and large microwaves are not accepted.

Instead, try giving away larger items like this for free on Facebook Marketplace or try contacting a junk removal service.

Items In Poor Condition

Items in poor condition are items that are worn, stained, and non-functioning. If you donate items like this, they will most likely be thrown out.

It's better to recycle items that are in poor condition. I'd recommend giving items away for free that might be 'worth' something to someone for free online. And if your items are not in good shape, but can be 'fixed', you might have luck with somebody online. For instance, sometimes things just need a repair for it to be put back to use.

Personal Care Products

Lotions, makeup, perfume, nail polish and other personal care products may not be accepted at Goodwill.

But if the product is sealed and unused, there's a chance that your Goodwill donation center will accept it. Call them before your visit to confirm.

Broken Items

Items that are cracked, have missing pieces, or simply don't work are typically not accepted.

These items may end up going to the landfill. As an alternative, consider recycling the item or giving it away for free to someone online who could repair it.

Worn Out Clothing

Clothing that is severely stained, torn, or in very poor condition is not accepted.

There's a general rule I follow when I donate my items. If I wouldn't wear it or buy it myself, don't donate it. Consider recycling textiles instead.

Auto Parts

Auto parts including car seats, tires, and car batteries are not accepted.

Instead, take your auto parts to an auto parts store or recycling center.

Flammable Items

Items that are flammable or contain chemicals such as paint, gasoline, propane tanks, and cleaning supplies are not accepted.

As an alternative, contact your local hazardous waste facility for proper disposal.

Mattresses and Box Springs

Mattresses and box springs are not accepted at most Goodwill locations due to health and safety reasons, including the potential for bed bugs.

Contact your local waste management service for mattress disposal options.

Weapons

Firearms, ammunition, knives (other than kitchen knives), and other weapons are not accepted.

Contact your local police department for safe weapon disposal options.

Building Materials

Construction materials like lumber, pipes, windows, doors, and tiles are not accepted.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore often accepts building materials. Contact them to see if they can use your items.

Food and Beverages

Food items, whether opened or unopened, are not accepted at Goodwill.

If you have unexpired, unopened food items, consider donating them to a local food bank instead.
